Tools and Hardware Reviews of Porter-Cable PSH1 Gravity Feed Spray Gun

Customer Review: PC gravity sprayer
Summary: 4 Stars

excellent product. works very well with stains and thinner paints. I purchased the larger latext needle and it work pretty good. there may be a learning curve I need to go through for the thicker material.

Customer Review: spray finishing gun
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very good piece of equipment. I just wish it came with more adapters.

Customer Review: Excellent performer
Summary: 4 Stars

Bought it last week to finish a chiffarobe I've been restoring. I used it to spray shellac, using a PC pancake compressor. I had no problems once I figured it out.
I recommend closing the fluid control valve to start out, and opening it slowly to figure out how much product to deliver. Also, make SURE you run mineral spirits through it to clean it.
Other than that, its great.

Customer Review: Great gun, with one minor flaw
Summary: 4 Stars

I just bought this gun last week for a project that I was working on, I wanted to spray Rustoleum satin on it, but I'm not crazy about the finish I've been getting with their rattlecans, so I took the plunge, mostly based on the reviews I read here.

I can echo a lot of the comments that you will read here: it is very well made, sprays great, overspray is surprisingly low, etc. It took me quite a while to get the pattern and feel to the spray so that I could use it well, but others have told me that Rustoleum is like that, it is hard to get it to spray well. I'm sure with other materials it will be easier to work with. Like others say, the documentation provided is poor, they give you no pointers or tips on proper paint viscosity or how to set the gun for spraying different materials, you just have to experiment.

I have a large-ish Porter-Cable compressor, so it had no trouble keeping up with the demand. I found the gum relatively easy to clean (compared to others), but it still took me awhile. Overall I'm happy with it and would highly recommend it to others.

Now my one complaint: the fitting provided on the end of the regulator is a very odd non-standard thread, it is described in the manual as 1/4" NPS. It is NOT the very common 1/4" NPT, and if you try to attach a quick-connect that is NPT, it will leak (at least mine did). NPS reqires a rubber gasket or O-ring to seal. Maybe with a bunch of teflon tape or plumbers dope you can keep it from leaking, or maybe others have just let it leak, but I was surprised that this was never mentioned in any of the other reviews. I went to several hardware stores, big and small, even a plumbing supply place, nobody could find an adapter for it. Very annoying. Finally, in desperation, I put a wrench on the fitting on the bottom of the regulator and gently torqued on it, and it came off, revealing a standard 1/8" NPT female thread. I had to get a converter fitting to get it up to 1/4" NPT so I could attach an in-line dessicant filter.

There is no way to use the gun without the regulator attached, so by the time you get all this stuff hanging below the bottom of the handle (tail of the gun, regulator, adapter, in-line filter, quick-connector), it's pretty long, so you can't get very close to the ground without tipping the gun on it's side, and it won't spray this way (paint stops feeding). Fortunately it wasn't a problem for me on this project, but I'm not sure how I'm gonna handle this if I ever paint a vehicle side panel, I don't have a lift.

That is my one complaint, otherwise it's a great unit and I would give it 5 stars. I'd be interested to hear how others solved the fitting issue, as I found it very frustrating.

Customer Review: The problem is in the cup
Summary: 2 Stars

This gun works fine for small jobs, but the plastic cup is shoddy and the top separates from the rest of the cup. Duct tape only works for so long.

Further, they make adding a replacement cup impossible because the screw size is proprietary (non standard), and it is impossible to find a replacement cup through Porter Cable. They are genuinely disinterested in helping you.
